ABSTRACT:

In a metropolitan city like Hamburg, equity and freedom within some of its streets can be a myth, especially in its famed neighbourhood situated right in its centre, St. Georg. The main two arteries in that quarter are called Lange Reihe and Steindamm, two parallel streets located only few hundred meters away, yet the social tension between them is profound. The first is a perused destination for LGBTQ+ community, while the latter is a port of call for Muslim immigrants. In this chapter we talk about both streets as public spaces that fall heavily under social prejudices. Through tracing back their history, the cultural backgrounds that shaped them, and the reasons why they became dissonant with each other, we try to find out why we cannot say some streets are ours!
